What Constitutes True Shared Hardship? Wealthy Individuals Spending Freely Outperforms Forcing Youth to Tighten Belts

When the economy contracts, the most absurd rhetoric is demanding those already burdened tighten their belts. Genuine shared hardship is never a moral martyrdom for the weak, but a tactical retreat by those who have benefited from the status quo: asset holders vacating positions, genuine consumption revitalizing the real economy, and taking on leverage to stabilize the system.

Curator’s Note: Whenever external conditions tighten and the phrase “shared hardship” is frequently invoked, a deeply ironic inversion often occurs in reality:

The established groups, already overflowing with wealth and secure in their fortunes, hoard their wallets tighter than a drum, while simultaneously blocking core positions and crushing the younger generation. They then pontificate in morning meetings to young people earning a few thousand a month, urging them to “have a sense of the bigger picture and tighten their belts.”

This narrative, which shifts the entire burden onto the struggling lower strata, appears righteous but is, in fact, the most hypocritical form of moral coercion. True shared hardship, logically consistent and capable of salvaging liquidity in macroeconomic terms, should never be the bleeding martyrdom of the weak. Instead, it ought to be a ‘tactical concession and strategic underwriting’ by those who have benefited from the existing order.

I. Breaking the Intergenerational Stalemate: Vacating Positions is the True Lifeline for the Underclass

The fundamental reason modern economies become stagnant is never a lack of diligence among the youth, but rather the refusal of those occupying existing resources to step aside.

Over the past three decades, China has experienced a spectacular period of asset inflation and wealth dividends. Many in the middle and upper echelons who caught the wave of the era have long since accumulated their initial capital, owning multiple core properties and possessing a solid asset base. Logically, these individuals should have met the objective conditions to disengage from high-intensity labor.

However, reality often presents a cruel intergenerational lock-in:

Many senior individuals in government, state-owned enterprises, or large corporations, even if they have entered a phase of diminishing marginal returns and are merely coasting, still cling to the highest-paying, most resource-intensive core positions by virtue of their early seniority, experience, and informational advantages. They avoid mistakes, refuse to relinquish control, and remain in place, spending their days sipping tea, reading newspapers, and incrementally increasing pressure downwards, pushing internal communication costs to their extreme.

On the other end are the young people just out of school, lacking capital accumulation. Without the substantial retirement funds of their parents to fall back on, burdened by exorbitant rent and the pressure to survive, they live hand-to-mouth. Yet, they are forced to scramble for scraps in a distorted labor market, even being pushed into the precarious existence of “flexible employment” as disposable gig workers.

【Logic for Breaking the Intergenerational Cycle】

  • Occupation of Existing Resources ➔ Core positions are locked, preventing upward mobility for the young, suffocating social fluidity.
  • Strategic Retreat ➔ High-quality positions are freed up, opening lifelines, allowing young people to earn a dignified wage.
  • Intergenerational Succession ➔ Shifts from a zero-sum struggle of “older generation crushing the younger” to a natural, orderly ecological metabolism.

True responsibility lies with those who reaped the full benefits of the earlier era and whose assets are now secure, to demonstrate the courage for a strategic retreat. They should vacate their positions and cede control of the means of production to the younger generation who more desperately need that income to support their families. This is not an act of evasion, but the most genuine and direct transfusion of lifeblood to families at the bottom.

II. Reconstructing the Liquidity Loop: The Wealthy Spending Generously is the True Boon for the Real Economy

In the classic framework of macroeconomics, there is a famous concept called the “Paradox of Thrift”: while frugality is a virtue for individuals, when everyone in society begins to save out of fear, the entire economy plunges into an inescapable liquidity trap.

The most absurd spectacle is unfolding before us:

  • The Predicament of the Underclass: Ordinary workers have a very high marginal propensity to consume (they’d spend ninety out of a hundred dollars to maintain basic needs and dignity), but their disposable income is squeezed by rent, childcare, and healthcare. Even if they want to spend, their will is strong but their means are limited.
  • Risk Aversion of the Affluent: Wealthy families and high-net-worth individuals, who control the vast majority of society’s wealth, have a very low marginal propensity to consume. Out of fear for the future, they choose to comprehensively contract their activities, hoarding vast sums of cash in fixed deposits, large-denomination certificates of deposit, and annuity insurance policies.

When money stagnates, the economy becomes a stagnant pool.

Goods produced by factories go unsold, small restaurants on the street are deserted, and department store employees face layoffs and pay cuts. In such a situation, constantly urging young people earning three thousand a month to “boost domestic demand” is akin to forcing fish to spit water in a dry riverbed.

True shared hardship involves those with the capacity and financial means actively stepping forward to “bleed through consumption”:

Stop competing with the younger generation for meager profits. Go on vacation, relax, breathe fresh air in the mountains, play golf, and spend money at the independently run small shops and private restaurants in the neighborhoods. Every non-essential expense you incur, every service premium you pay, essentially redirects the “stagnant water” trapped in the financial system back into the bustling marketplace. It is precisely these cash flows, penetrating class barriers, that sustain millions of small and micro businesses, chefs, coaches, and service workers.

III. Acting as a System Shock Absorber: Underwriting Leverage for a Soft Landing

Beyond vacating positions and leading consumption, true shared hardship is also reflected in the responsibility loop on the asset-liability side.

The wealth-creation myth of the past two decades was essentially a tidal wave propelled by societal credit leverage and land capitalization. Those who received large portions of the cake during the asset inflation cycle must clearly recognize: the net worth of their assets comes not only from their personal efforts but also from the realization of era-specific credit dividends.

When the cycle turns and the tide recedes, the most vulnerable are always ordinary families who bought at the peak and have meager savings. If systemic defaults are allowed to spread, the spiral contraction of balance sheets will rapidly breach the underlying risk controls of banks, triggering liquidity freezes and a catastrophic hard landing.

True middle and high-net-worth individuals, when facing cyclical pain:

  1. Refuse Panic Selling: Do not join the destructive stampede of selling, thereby exacerbating already fragile asset prices.
  2. Maintain Commitment: Within their financial capacity, continue to stably support reasonable mortgage and commercial credit obligations, actively bearing the brunt of capital depreciation.
  3. Act as a Buffer: Use accumulated profits and risk-resilience buffers from earlier times to construct the final defense line for balance sheets, preventing a wave of bad debts from indiscriminately spreading to the lower strata.

Having enjoyed the windfall profits of the upswing, one must demonstrate corresponding resilience and responsibility during the downturn. This is how the upper echelons provide the most robust safeguard for the entire social order.

IV. Two Diametrically Opposed Forms of “Shared Hardship”

To see through the fog of current economic narratives, let’s frankly contrast the verbal moral coercion with genuinely self-consistent economic logic:

Comparison DimensionHypocritical “Moral Coercion” Shared HardshipTruly Self-Consistent “Economic Ecology” Shared Hardship
Subject of ResponsibilityForcing the vulnerable and workers at the bottom to sacrificeActively borne by those who have benefited from asset dividends
Workplace StrategySeniors cling to leisurely core positions, intensely pressuring juniorsThose financially secure make a strategic retreat, ceding positions and salaries to the young
Fund FlowThe rich hoard cash, forcing the poor to consumeThe wealthy lead in spending and vacationing, revitalizing liquidity in small and micro enterprises
Leverage ResponseThe established escape, leaving the underclass to face defaultsThose with means stabilize their debt lines, acting as shock absorbers for a soft financial landing
Ultimate OutcomeIncreased intergenerational conflict, depletion of the underclass, spiral economic declineUnlocks the liquidity loop, each generation in its proper place, revitalizing the social ecosystem

The absurdity of reality lies precisely in the fact that many who hold the power of discourse have reversed these two. They are accustomed to packaging their self-interest in grand narratives, using “weathering the storm together” to conceal their own hoarding and stinginess.

V. From Passive Entrapment to Active Retreat: The Clarity of FIRE and Social Positive Externalities

Understanding this logic provides a new perspective on the increasing number of people choosing “active retreat” in recent years (such as FIRE, digital nomadism, and light entrepreneurship).

Many individuals, after accumulating a basic safety net, actively choose to withdraw from the soul-crushing grind of large corporations. In the eyes of the conventional “hustle culture,” this might be disparaged as “lying flat” or “lack of ambition.” However, from a broader social ecological perspective, this strategic retreat is not only a salvation for individual physical and mental health but also possesses significant positive externalities:

  • You vacate a high-paying position: Allowing a younger person, who urgently needs that income to start a family, support parents, and build a life, to take it.
  • You transform from a creator of involution to a genuine consumer: You convert the energy previously wasted on endless PowerPoint presentations into tangible spending that travels the world, experiences life, and supports real businesses.
  • You disrupt a pathological evaluation system: Proving to everyone that there is more than one way to live life than to exhaust oneself in an office until the oil runs dry.

True shared hardship requires no endless moralizing; it simply needs a return to common sense and ecological balance:

Those with the capacity retreat to consume, and those in need step up to run; let the vital currents flow, and let everyone return to their ecological niche. This is the most elegant and effective answer for any mature civilization emerging from cyclical quagmires.
